English IPA
English IPA
brewed with Rodger Davis at the Triple Rock Brewery, Berkeley, California.
Inspiration: A journey much celebrated by beer lovers around the world.
Purpose: A tribute to the original IPA’s shipped from Burton to Bombay, with a faint addition of oak.
A dangerous collaboration: Hand-carried fruity Bramling Cross hops from England to California (unavailable in the US). The US Border inspectors did not take too kindly to the treasure. Green, highly aromatic little pellets can have a tendency to incur the ire of those in uniform.
Brewed in the February, the final aged keg debuted in August. The beer had evolved to what we hoped was a fitting tribute to the original, be they oaked or not.
How this beer came to be….
Being invited to brew at one of the original US brewpubs was already something special. To top it off, the invitation was from GABF Award winning brewer, Rodger Davis.
Triple Rock Brewery was the fifth brewpub to open in the United States. The list of brewer alumni reads like a who’s who of amazing brewers. A couple of interesting facts: It is the last of the original breweries still using the original equipment. It’s also the only one still owned and operated by the original founders – The Martins.
John and Reid Martin have founded several iconic breweries and brewpubs in the West Coast beer industry; and to date, Triple Rock remains their favourite. “It’s where real brewpub beer began in the Bay Area,” says John. “We feel lucky to have been there at the beginning of the craft brewing renaissance“.
“Pours clear and golden deep orange with small white head. Aroma is roasted malty and crisp hoppy with distinct hops fruity note. Bitter and dry fruity flavoured finish Very very smooth and elegant, not too heavy on the hops nor on the malt base” score 4/5 | Yesper, Danish Ratebeerian, whilst in California.
Malt: English Pale Malts, American Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 55l
Hops: Magnum, lots and lots of EKG, Bramling Cross. Yeast: English Ale.
